Using technology scientists have created Nordic Chem an Antimicrobial Coating. The formula is a next generation water-based, long-term antimicrobial coating designed to inhibit the growth of microorganisms for up to 90 days. Once the coating has dried it forms a layer of spikes that will destroy the cell of a Virus or Bacteria on contact. The product works by using a mechanical kill instead of a chemical, meaning its safer for the environment long term. Once the coating has been applied it will last up to 3 months and will help to stop the transmission of germs from person to person. The active ingredient in the coating is ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) registered and compliant.

Why you need LumaTouch Points.


Since the out break of the virus it is more important that hygiene and cleanliness is at the forefront of peoples minds. One of the main places viruses can transfer from person to person is from touching points such as handles, push buttons and touch screens. To help minimize the spread we have developed a product that can be used on surfaces as extra protection during your daily cleaning routines.

Have you ever looked at how many times an item or surface is touched by different people. For example the computer keyboard is 400 times more contaminated by microbes than a WC, with 60 times more germs It is even dirtier than the telephone, and would exceed the rate limit by 150 times of bacteria admissible for health. The television remote control, especially in hotels, contains a level of microbes that still exceeds previous figures. Items such as doorknobs, toilets, touch screens at bank counters, touch kiosks in fast food restaurants or salt shakers or even chairs in restaurants are nests of microbes, a number of which are dangerous for health. 

Customers and employees want to know that you are making every effort to protect them and it needs to be in a way that is visible.

Coronavirus living on a surface.

As you can see from the chart on the left, Coronavirus can last for up to 96 hours on Stainless steel and Plastic surfaces, this means that your door handles or push doors could potentially be harbouring Viruses & Bacteria on. We did a recent case study watching how many people came into a restaurant over a period of one hour, we found that during this period up to 30 people entered the restaurant touching the same point on the door. This shows that unless the door is continually cleaned the bacteria has time to grow and the population growth increases, viruses like SARS-CoV-2 will sit on the surface until they eventually die or find a host to attach to. UPDATE: Recent research carried out in October by Australia's national science agency found surfaces contaminated for upto 28 days.

How Self-Cleaning Touch Points work.

The surfaces are coated with a proven and patented photocatalytic coating technology. The photocatalytic property allows for light to activate the coating allowing it to break down volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors, and most airborne noxious (NOx) substances. The coating is powered by advanced TiO2 particles that not only have a “Antimicrobial” property but also a "Smog-eating" property, the surface also creates a hydrophilic, self cleaning surface, reducing the need for maintenance. The oxidizing power created by Titanium dioxide intiated photocatalysis is actually more than twice as powerful as bleach in the right conditions. Research has been carried out over the last 20 years that supports the proven science of Ti02.

How Coating tests showed a 99.9% reduction.

A number of tests have been carried out on the coating used on our touch points, the test carried out on Sars-CoV showed a 5 log reduction, a 5-log reduction means lowering the number of microorganisms by 100,000-fold, for example, if a surface has 100,000 pathogenic microbes on it, a 5-log reduction would reduce the number of microorganisms to one. A 5-log reduction means that it inactivates 99.9% of the microbe on the surface within 5 minutes. The coating was also tested against other Bacteria & Viruses and showed an overall 99.96% reduction across the board. Bacterial growth on a surface.

Not only do our Lumatouch point surfaces reduce Coronavirus  but they also help stop bacterial population on the surface, the chart on the left hand side shows two surfaces that have been tested, an untreated surface( in blue) and a treated surface ( in red). The bacteria starts to populate the surface and continues to grow, the treated surface inhibits the development of the bacteria from the moment it touches the surface and continues to stop the bacterial growth. Tests showed a 99.96% reduction of germs on the surfaces.

Photocatalytic Self-Cleaning surface test.

Photocatalytic surfaces can be tested with a test developed by Queens University Belfast, a mark is placed onto a self-cleaning surface and a non self-cleaning surface. When the ink is exposed to light it changes colour but only if it is on a photocatalytic surface. You will see from the image on the left that a test was carried out using this method. First a tick was placed on each surface, then the sample was exposed to light. After a few minutes the treated surface had changed to Pink and the untreated surface remained Blue.

Laboratory Summary on Ti02 Photocatalytic Nanoparticles

In our laboratory, we routinely check surfaces, light switches, commonly touched areas, and instruments for contamination using the swab survey method. We used the above product in our laboratory co cover mobile phones, computer screens and testing stations. After our simulated use of the product, we conducted swab collected PCR testing for indetification of microorganism to assess usability of the product to provide feedback. All samples showed initial inoculation of microorganism on the surface study within 2 minutes of microorganism exposure to the tested surface. The coating could be instrumental for laboratory use, keeping technologists healthy and reducing the spread and transmission of Covid-19 for front line workers.

Recent Research of Air and Surface Contamination by SARS-CoV-2

A recent study carried out tests on covid 19 infected patient rooms, the tests carried out where done on the surface of items and air samples. During the process 3 rooms are tested for airborne infection and 245 surface samples are collected. 66.7% of surfaces in the rooms were found to be contaminated in the first week of illness and 20% of the rooms beyond the first week of illness. When the surfaces of the rooms are tested it shows the following results 65% of contamination was on the floor, 59% on the bed surfaces, 47% on door and handle surfaces, 35% on electric switches and other items, 30% on toilet flush and seat.

Investigation SARS-COV-2 Surface and air contamination London.

We performed this prospective cross-sectional observational study in a multi-site London hospital. Results: Viral RNA was detected on 114/218 (52.3%) of surfaces and 14/31 (38.7%) air samples Conclusions: Our findings of extensive viral RNA contamination of surfaces and air across a range of acute healthcare settings in the absence of cultured virus underlines the potential risk from environmental contamination in managing COVID-19, and the need for effective use of PPE, physical distancing, and hand/surface hygiene.
